According to Donald Rumsfeld, the Bush administration handled the “War On Terror” just fine, as proven by the fact that President Obama is now such a big fan of their work.
Appearing on CNN with Candy Crowley, Rumsfeld noted that Obama — despite criticizing Bush on the campaign trail — has perpetuated several highly contentious Bush-era policies since taking office.
“They have now switched from campaign mode,” Rumsfeld said. “They are keeping Guantanamo Bay, they are keeping indefinite detention, they are keeping military commissions. So obviously they have come to the conclusion that it’s easier to campaign than it is to govern.”
“They’ve made a series of right decisions in not trying to tear down that structure,” he added.
This past week, the House passed an extension of key provisions of the Patriot Act, another signature Bush initiative — which Obama is expected to sign into law.
In the interview, Rumsfeld also appeared dumbfounded when repeatedly asked if Obama had burnished America’s image in the eyes of the world. Specifically, he balked at the notion that Obama’s Nobel Prize was proof of that, saying that the award had been given on “hope” alone, and not for anything Obama had actually had achieved.
“He’d been in office fifteen minutes,” Rumsfeld said.
