Harry Reid has a new ad int he Nevada Senate race, slamming Republican nominee Sharron Angle for having voted in the state Assembly against mandating that insurance companies cover colon cancer screenings – part of what looks like a new major theme being pushed by the Reid campaign.

“Colon cancer kills — unless you catch it early,” the announcer says. “That’s why 39 members of the Assembly voted to make insurance companies cover colon cancer tests. But Sharron Angle was one of only two to vote ‘no.’

The ad then cuts to an excerpt an interview that Angle did with Nevada journalist Jon Ralston in September. “Don’t you think it’s government’s responsibility to make sure insurance companies cover certain things?” Ralston asked. To which Angled replied: “No, I don’t think so.”

The announcer concludes: “Sharron Angle’s against making insurance companies cover colon cancer tests, mammograms, or anything else. That’s not just extreme — it’s dangerous.”

This comes a day after the Reid campaign and the Nevada Democrats rolled out video of Angle in August 2009, opposing state mandates that required insurance companies to cover autism.

The TPM Poll Average currently puts Reid ahead by 47.2%-44.9%.

The same theme, of attacking a candidate for opposing mandates that require insurance companies to cover certain conditions and procedures, was previously used by then-Gov. Jon Corzine (D-NJ) in last years gubernatorial race, focusing on the issue of mammograms against Republican Chris Christie. Corzine nevertheless lost that race. But unlike Reid, Corzine was already trailing at the time he brought out this particular issue, and polling data did indicate that it was somewhat effective narrowing the margin.
