According to a PPP poll released Friday, only one-third of Arizona’s registered voters approve of Sen. John McCain’s (R) job performance, thus earning McCain the ignoble distinction of the nation’s third least popular Senator based on PPP’s data.
In the poll, 34% of voters said they approve of McCain’s job performance, compared to 53% who disapprove.
Only Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) — the erstwhile Democrat who has almost completely alienated his former party — and Sen. John Ensign — who stepped down this week after a protracted sex scandal — have polled worse in PPP surveys in the past year. In March, PPP found that just 29% of Connecticut voters approved of Lieberman’s job performance, while 58% disapproved. Just 29% of Nevadans gave Ensign positive marks in an April PPP poll, while 55% said the opposite.
McCain’s approval numbers are deep underwater with both Democrats and independents. A majority of Democrats had a negative opinion of him by a 67% to 23% split, while a majority of independents said the same by a split of 58% to 31%.
Even McCain’s own party wasn’t so thrilled with his job performance. A 44% plurality of GOP voters said they approved of his job performance, but nearly as many, 40%, said the opposite.
McCain, the GOP’s 2008 presidential nominee, had fallen so far from favor that he faced a minor scare in a primary contest last year before pulling away to win another term in office.
The PPP poll was conducted April 28-May1 among 623 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 3.9%
