The Senate may be deadlocked over what to do with the DREAM Act in the lame duck session, but if the general public were able to vote on the immigration bill, at least one poll suggests it would pass.

According to a new Gallup poll, a narrow majority of Americans would vote to pass the DREAM Act. Fifty-four percent of respondents said they favored the measure — which would grant legal residency to illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. as children if they graduate high school and complete two years of college or military service — while 42% said they were opposed.

The poll did not cite the DREAM Act by name, instead asking respondents:

Suppose that on Election Day you could vote on key issues as well as candidates. Please tell me whether you would vote for or against a law that would…Allow illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children to gain legal resident status if they join the military or go to college.

The House passed the DREAM Act on Wednesday, but the Senate postponed a vote on the bill until next week when it appeared they did not have enough support for it to pass.

The poll, conducted December 3-6, surveyed approximately 1,000 adults nationwide. It has a margin of error of 4.0%.
