Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) is stepping up his recent criticism of Mitt Romney, whose Massachusetts health care reform from several years ago bears a striking resemblance to the more recent Obama health care reform. Indeed, Perry’s recommendation for Romney’s potential White House aspirations is that Romney repudiate his own previous actions.

During an interview with Greta Van Susteren that aired Monday night, Perry was asked whether he could ever support Romney for president, in light of the similarities between the Massachusetts and national health care programs. (Both involve a mandate that individuals have health insurance, with subsidies for low-earners and various regulations of the private insurance plans.)

“I think it’s a problem to go — if he were to stand up and say, ‘You know what, this was a program that didn’t work, and I wish I hadn’t tried it,’ I think that would help him substantially,” said Perry. “But the fact is, they are so similar, that it is going to be a major anchor unless he stands up and repudiates that approach.”

Yeah, some major flip-flopping on the top national issue would probably help Mitt Romney. As we all know, he’s never had any reputation for changing his positions on issues. So he could probably take just one and survive it.

The key moment begins at about the 4:05 mark:
