Republican candidate for New York governor Rick Lazio has released a new web video that features New Yorkers expressing opposition for the proposed Cordoba House Islamic center two blocks from the site of Ground Zero, in a series of man-on-the-street interviews.

The interviews are accompanied by some somber, dirge-like music, and follow video footage of people running after the World Trade Center towers collapsed on September 11, 2001.

One man says news of the plans “just hit me in the gut,” and another says “I think it’s insensitive.”

Lazio’s campaign also asks, “What do New Yorkers think about Andrew Cuomo’s failure to investigate the funding of the mosque?”

One New Yorker says Cuomo, Lazio’s likely Democratic opponent, “should find out exactly where the money’s coming from.” Another calls “on all politicians to get their asses involved in this.”

“Open up the books, Andrew,” says another.

Watch:

Lazio faces Carl Paladino in the September 14 Republican primary. Even if he’s victorious, Lazio faces a tough challenge in November. The TPM Poll Average shows Cuomo leading Lazio 58.0-26.5.
