MoveOn.org is releasing a new television ad targeting Minority Leader John Boehner as in the pocket of the insurance industry.

The new, satirical ad specifically goes after this week’s vote on antitrust legislation related to insurance companies – Boehner (R-OH) opposed the bill. The ad is running on television in Boehner’s district, MoveOn said.

“As House Minority Leader and a favorite of the insurance industry, John’s shown the courage to stand up for the big guy,” MoveOn charges in the ad.

“He’s defended health insurance companies’ rights to jack up your premiums, to drop you whenever they feel like it, and most recently, to maintain monopolies that hurt consumers.”

It’s an interesting shift since the liberal organization has been investing its time and money into promoting health care reform. This is related but is the first real Republican target in awhile. It also comes one day after Boehner attended the White House health care summit.

MoveOn Executive Director Justin Ruben said they are highlighting the issue in advance of the 2010 midterm elections, adding in a call to action for Democrats to finish out the health care bill on Capitol Hill.

“He not only votes against common sense legislation to end insurance company abuses, he even votes against bipartisan legislation to end their anti-trust exception,” Ruben said. “It’s time to move on to solving the health care crisis, with or with out him.”
