Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-LA) spent $115,000 on his first television advertising buy in his effort to unseat incumbent Sen. David Vitter (R). In the advertisement, Melancon touts his own conservative credentials, but pulls no punches when it comes to Vitter.

“I’m a pro-life, pro-gun Louisiana Democrat. I’ve been a businessman most of my life,” says Melancon — who says he expects Vitter to misrepresent his record. He adds, “I’ll work with anyone, if it’s the right thing to do for Louisiana.”

Melancon’s ad echoes something Chet Traylor (R) said about Vitter in his first television interview Monday: “It’s awful easy to be against everything. It’s something else to be for something, to get something accomplished.” It seems both Melancon and Traylor are keen not just to highlight Vitter’s personal failings, but to make issue of his alleged lack of accomplishments as a Senator in service of the Republican agenda.
