Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has a new ad against his challenger in the Republican primary, former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, attacking Hayworth for promoting big spending when he was in Congress — and noting that Hayworth was ultimately voted out.
The announcer praises McCain’s record of fighting earmark spending. “But J.D. Hayworth, described as an avid earmarker, supported thousands of earmarks worth billions of dollars — before we voted him out of office,” the announcer says. A woman then cuts in at the end of the ad: “I just don’t think we can afford J.D. Hayworth right now.”
We asked Hayworth spokesman Mark Sanders for comment. “The kind lady at the end of the ad has it wrong. She can’t afford not to have J.D. Hayworth,” said Sanders. “Between the Wall St. bailout and the outrageous 2.6 trillion plan for retirement benefits for illegal aliens, she really can’t afford six more years of John McCain. Voters are on to this old Washington trick of cherry-picking measures in massive appropriation bills and using them in attack ads. John McCain has gone negative. He must be worried.”
