Jon Stewart had a novel idea Wednesday evening: Congress should be subject to the same laws the American people abide by.
But Stewart had a little fun with a 60 Minutes investigation into members of Congress making investments based on information they gain in public service.
“Just like the founding fathers intended,” Stewart said. “It’s our system of checks and balances. They deposit checks … it increases their balances.”
So he was pleased Congress passed the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge act (STOCK act). It’s designed to put an end to the practice of insider trading.
“Congress should obey the same laws as everybody else,” Stewart said. “I believe that was in the ‘No Shit, Sherlock Act of 2000-and-Always.”
