When the clock struck 10 a.m. on Thursday, the race was on to be the first news organization to report on the Supreme Court’s historic health care ruling.

“Which news organization would be the first to speak of the great decision?” Stewart said Thursday. “Who would emerge from the chaos as today’s grand champion of news first-iness?”

In a photo finish, CNN beat Fox News with its first report. But in a moment tailor-made for The Daily Show, both networks got it wrong. Fox News quickly corrected its mistake. But CNN went on for seven full minutes. During CNN’s excruciating coverage, Wolf Blitzer declared the false ruling a major blow for the administration. Yes, Stewart agreed. A huge blow for the “administration,” not a major American news network.

“Yes, how will the administration recover after this incredibly public blow to their credibility,” Stewart said. “I mean, the administration staked their entire reputation on this important moment, and now the administration is out there, the face of this giant fuck up. “Sure wouldn’t want to be the administration right now.”
