Republicans control the all of Virginia’s statewide state government posts now, but Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) appealed to them tonight to let the party they just decimated continue to have a voice in Richmond.

From Webb’s statement on the races in Virginia tonight:

“I am very familiar with long and divisive campaigns. I am confident that, with the close of campaign season tonight, we can put partisanship aside and work collectively to further the best interests of Virginia and our people.”

Webb congratulated Bob McDonnell promised to help him lead in a bipartisan fashion:

Together with other Democrats from across the Commonwealth, I pledge to do all I can to help the Governor-elect sustain our progress and build a stronger future for all Virginians.

He also reached out to Democratic nominee Creigh Deeds, who’ll return to the state Senate now that the gubernatorial race is over:

I also want to applaud the campaign run by my friend Senator Creigh Deeds … Creigh offered a strong vision for education, economic growth and fairness for the working people. He will continue to be an important leader in the Senate of Virginia.”
