Herman Cain made an issue of Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith in an interview the Washington Times published Monday.

Arguing he’d make a better choice than Romney, Cain said that current GOP presidential frontrunner’s religion will be a problem with a large and important segment of the base.

“it doesn’t bother me,” Cain told the Times, “but i do know that its an issue with a lot of Southerners.”

Cain:

I know the South and you have to win the South. Mitt Romney didn’t win the South when John McCain won the South and Mike Huckabee won the South. And I think that the reason he will have a difficult time winning the South is when he ran the first time he did not do a good job of communicating his religion.

Cain said that thanks to Romney’s religion — plus the “ankle braclet on called RomneyCare” — Romney just can’t win the nomination.

“You don’t win South Carolina and Florida and Georgia, you can’t win the nomination and then you can’t win the presidency,” Cain said.

The Romney campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
