Doctors at the University of Arizona Medical Center just gave a press conference on the condition of the mass shooting victims in Tucson, and said that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is “breathing on her own” after being shot in the head.

Dr. Peter Rhee said that six patients still remain in the hospital, one is in critical condition, three are in serious condition, and two are in fair condition. He added that one patient is currently in surgery.

Giffords’ doctor, Michael LeMole, said that she is “holding her own,” and her status is the same as yesterday. They’ve eased up on the level of sedation, and she is drawing breath on her own, though they’ve kept the breathing tube in to prevent complications like pneumonia.

LeMole added that because of the nature of gunshot wounds to the head, Giffords “has no right to look this good, and she does.” But “we all have to be extremely patient.”

Rhee added that because Giffords’ husband is an astronaut for NASA, “the resources of the entire military have been made available to us.”
