News has emerged that the health of Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate John Edwards (D-NC), has taken a turn for the worse. A statement issued by her family indicates that she is no longer receiving treatment for her metastatic breast cancer, and is resting at home with her family and friends.

People magazine reports:

Elizabeth Edwards’s cancer fight has taken a turn for the worse, with the disease spreading to her liver and doctors recommending against additional treatment.

“Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive. She is resting at home with family and friends,” the Edwards family says in a statement to PEOPLE.

People added that Edwards had posted a message to her friends and family on her private Facebook page.

“I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope,” she writes. “These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that.”

Fox News added:

“The wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, was briefly hospitalized recently, but she is now at home, and her family and friends are lending their support,” several sources tied to John Edwards’ presidential campaign said Monday.

Elizabeth Edwards is the estranged wife of former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC), the two-time candidate for president and 2004 Democratic nominee for Vice President. Her cancer was first publicly disclosed shortly after the 2004 election. After receiving treatment and going into remission, the cancer resurfaced in 2007, during her husband’s second campaign for president.

After the campaign was over, their marriage was rocked by John Edwards’s admission in 2008 of an extra-marital affair with former campaign aide Rielle Hunter, though he continued to deny being the father of Hunter’s daughter. In January 2010, Elizabeth legally separated from John Edwards, following his admission that he was indeed the father.
