Stephen Colbert on Wednesday awarded Virginia state Senate Republicans his “Alpha Dog of the Week” honor for approving a mid-term redistricting plan that redraws the Senate districts more favorably to the GOP. The districts had already been redrawn in 2011, after the 2010 census.

The Virginia state Senate is split between 20 Republicans and 20 Democrats, so why didn’t the Democrats just stop them, Colbert wondered. “I’ll tell you why. Because these Republicans are alpha dogs.” They took advantage of Sen. Henry Marsh’s (D)’s absence. A 79-year-old civil rights leader, Marsh was in Washington, D.C., for President Obama’s inauguration ceremony.

“I think the way these good ol’ alpha dogs really swung their sacks in the faces of black voters was that after this vote on Martin Luther King Day, they adjourned in memory of Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson,” Colbert said.

Again congratulating the Republican senators, Colbert said: “So, Virginia state Senate, for putting Republican leadership on the map, and then heavily redrawing that map in your favor, you gentlemen are my alpha dogs of the week.”
