You may recall that House Minority Leader John Boehner really got his public campaign for the Speakership moving by calling for Larry Summers and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to resign. Today’s announcement that Summers is stepping down — though unrelated to Boehner’s push — is still a feather in his cap. But is it enough to ease the tension between GOP leadership and the White House?

Nope!

“We hope this will be followed by an announcement that the White House is ready to work with Republicans to cut spending and stop the president’s tax hike,” says Boehner’s spokesman Michael Steel in a statement emailed my way. “Until that happens, the White House is not focused on the number one issue on the minds of the American people: jobs.”

The legislative fights over both taxes and spending are right around the corner.
