House Minority Leader John Boehner, fresh out of a meeting with business and trade group lobbyists
, announced a new idea this afternoon: A moratorium on all new federal regulations, for a year.
"I think having a moratorium on new federal regulations is a great idea it sends a wonderful signal to the private sector that they're going to have some breathing room," he said, according to Greg Sargent
"I think there's probably a way to do this with an exemption for emergency regulations that may be needed for some particular agency or another," he said. "But if the American people knew there was going to be a moratorium in effect for a year that the federal government wasn't going to issue thousands more regulations, it would give them some breathing room."
Boehner's spokesman tells TPMDC that his boss doesn't mean for his moratorium to apply to the oil & gas industry. That, he said, would fall under the emergency exemption.
Thousands of new regulations, passed by Congress or by administrative agencies, go into effect every year. There are 300 federal agencies that pass regulations. They include the FDA, the TSA, the FBI, Customs and Border Protection, Veterans Affairs and every branch of the military.
