House Minority Leader John Boehner reiterated yesterday that he thinks BP should pay “for every dime” of the oil spill in the Gulf Coast, further walking back a remark he made last week that suggested taxpayers should pitch in for the cleanup costs.

Boehner (R-OH) appeared with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) on ABC’s This Week yesterday, and said that “BP ought to be held responsible for all of the costs that are involved in this. I’ve said that right from the beginning.”

Boehner added that he thinks “lifting the liability cap on BP and for this spill is appropriate,” and “they should be held responsible for every dime of this cost.”

Last week, Boehner suggested that the federal government (read: taxpayers) should contribute to the cleanup effort in the Gulf. He later walked back the comments amid criticism from Democrats.
