New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke at a press conference Monday afternoon at Ground Zero, in response to the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed. In his remarks, Bloomberg congratulated President Obama and proclaimed that bin Laden’s death shows that “the forces of freedom and justice have once again prevailed over those who use terror to pursue tyranny.”

“Today, we have come to the site that terrorists attacked in 1993 and again in 2001 to re-affirm our commitments – to all those we lost, to the future we believe in, and to a more peaceful and just world,” Bloomberg said.

“Osama bin Laden is dead, and the World Trade Center site is teeming with new life,” he continued. “Osama bin Laden is dead, and Lower Manhattan is pulsing with new activity. Osama bin Laden is dead, and New York City’s spirit has never been stronger.”

Bloomberg also referenced the celebrations at Ground Zero and around New York City late Sunday night in response to the news, calling them “a tribute to the selfless valor and dedication of our armed forces, and to all those who have worked to prevent terrorist attacks over the past nine and a half years.”

Watch:

On Monday, NY1 reported that New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) called the news “one for the good guy” and “a victory against terrorism and it’s a message to all terrorists that not only will we never give up and never give in, but we’ll never forget.”

And Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said people have “said to me they think of bin Laden every day, and that that evil man is alive and their husband, their wife, their child, their parent is dead. Well, that thought doesn’t have to cross their minds. That troubling, anxiety-producing thought does not cross their minds ever again.”
