Rep. Anthony Weiner has broken his silence on the controversial Cordoba House Muslim Community Center that will be built a few blocks from Ground Zero, writing a letter to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg that says “elected officials should endeavor to stay out of the business of deciding where houses of worship may or may not be.”
Weiner does add, however, that “fair questions” should be allowed to be raised. In a letter released to the New York Times, Weiner also writes that “I hope that as this issue is considered going forward, there is a process where those other great hallmarks of democracy are respected — transparency and tolerance of all view points.”
He adds: “That process can allow fair questions to be raised.”
The full letter can be read here.
As we’ve documented, many New York Democrats have been somewhat elusive when it comes to speaking out about the controversial construction plans.
