Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg took the stage at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night to deliver what he described as “an unconventional convention speech” calling for voters to unite behind Hillary Clinton across party lines, TPM’s Esme Cribb reported. “There is no doubt in my mind that Hillary Clinton is the right choice this November,” he said. “So tonight, as an independent, I am asking you to join with me not out of party loyalty, but out of love of country. And together, let’s elect a sane, competent person.”

Josh Marshall: “In the stories we tell about ourselves as Americans there are various set-piece historical moments where we’ve resisted darkness, failed many times of course, but remained true to who we are in our essence. In recent weeks especially I’ve increasingly thought that we are in the midst of one of those moments. We have all heard the curse, ‘May you live in interesting times.’ Well, we are living in interesting times. And that is not a good thing. What will we do? Those set piece moments are myths. But myths, proper myths, contain deep truths. It is a terrifying thing but in a way a gift to live in one of those moments. Like being called up for a special, albeit arduous, task. What new myth will we forge?”

Say What?!

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you can find the 33,000 emails that are missing.”

– Trump appealed directly to the country of Russia to “find” emails deleted from Hillary Clinton’s personal email server.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “I suspect that the prior story, the one in which [Trump] plays games with his income so as to keep his actual personal income very low and to avoid paying income taxes, even while living a billionaire’s lifestyle, are the real story behind the non-disclosure. But whatever the tax story, it’s more than fair to ask Trump about his business partners and dealings, the extent and dollar value of his business relationships with foreign billionaires, and to explain why those relationships don’t reflect upon his qualification or suitability for the office of President. As he wants to make a big deal about Hillary Clinton’s speeches, there’s absolutely no reason why his feet shouldn’t be held to the fire until he gives us at least as much information as Clinton voluntarily disclosed months ago.”

Related: During an off-the-rails press conference, Trump never answered the key question about his business ties with Russia.
