TPM Editor’s Blog

Tech Geeks, Gather Round

Every so often I liked to give you an update on what operating system and browsers people use to access TPM. So here are the latest numbers after the jump …

Operating System

Windows 46.85%
Macintosh 25.50%
iOS 19.71%
Android 5.91%
Linux 1.34%

Put another way, the operating system breakdown is

Microsoft 46.85%
Apple 45.21%
Google 5.91%

Browser

Safari 33.86%
Chrome 22.70%
Firefox 22.30%
IE 15.39%
Android 4.47%

For comparison, exactly four years ago (Dec.27 2008 - Jan 26 2009) the numbers were …

Firefox 43.36%
IE 35.16%
Safari 17.00
Chrome 2.42%

As someone who’s been using personal computer from the beginning, what jumps out at me is the relative non-dominance of Windows, which still kind of blows my mind. As I’ve noted in the past, our audience has always tilted disproportionately toward Mac users. But these numbers are also a reflection of the rise of iOS.

So if you break the browser numbers down by operating system, for instance, they look like this.

Firefox (Windows) 16.12%
IE (Windows) 15.23%
Safari (iOS) 15.18%
Chrome (Windows) 14.76%
Safari (Mac) 14.37%
Chrome (Mac) 5.62%
Firefox (Mac) 5.36%
Android 4.47%
Safari (in-app) 3.74%
Chrome (Android) .95%
Chrome (iOS) .77%

Finally, the percentage of visits to TPM from mobile devices currently stands at 26%. 75% of that mobile device traffic comes from iPhone and iPad.
