Hillary Clinton’s team on Thursday accused Donald Trump of trying to paper over the incendiary comments he has made as a presidential candidate.
“Donald Trump literally started his campaign by insulting people. He has continued to do so through each of the 428 days from then until now, without shame or regret,” Clinton deputy communications director Christina Reynolds said in a statement.
Trump apologized for the “personal pain” he has caused some Americans during the 2016 race by choosing “the wrong words” or saying “the wrong thing” during a Thursday night campaign rally in North Carolina.
Clinton’s campaign dismissed the speech, which was read from prepared remarks, as “Teleprompter regret.”
“We learned tonight that his speechwriter and teleprompter knows he has much for which he should apologize,” Reynolds said in the statement. “But that apology tonight is simply a well-written phrase until he tells us which of his many offensive, bullying and divisive comments he regrets — and changes his tune altogether.”
The Republican nominee did not directly apologize to any specific individual or group in his speech.
While Trump has mocked Clinton for relying on a teleprompter during her own rallies, he has increasingly made use of the device at his own public events as his team has pushed him to stay on-message. Thursday marked Trump’s third teleprompter speech this week, according to the Washington Post.
