A tow truck owner in North Carolina said he refused to tow a woman’s car in Asheville on Monday because he saw signs for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) campaign in her car.

“Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist minded person I have not gotten paid,” Kenneth Shupe told Greenville station WHNS. “Every time I deal with these people I get ‘Berned’ with an ‘e’ not a ‘u.'”

Shupe said that he is a conservative Christian who backs Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

Cassandra McWade recalled her encounter with Schupe to the Huffington Post.

“He said, ‘I can’t tow you … you’re a Bernie supporter,’” McWade said. “I was like, ‘Wait, are you serious? You’re kidding me.’”

She had been unable to restart her car after it was hit by a tractor trailer. McWade told the Huffington Post that she was unable to walk to a rest stop due to disabilities.

“I was dependent on anybody who was willing to help me, completely dependent,” she said.

Schupe told the Huffington Post that he did not realize McWade had disabilities. He said he still would have declined to tow her car, but that he would have waited for another tow service to arrive had he known.
