South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is expected to give the GOP’s response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Jan. 12.

Haley made headlines this summer when she called for the Confederate flag to be removed from the grounds outside of the state capitol.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) chose Haley to give the party’s response.

“This is a time of great challenges for our country, but also of great opportunities. I intend to speak about both,” she said in a statement.
